IMPACT Fellowship Research Training Faculty

The IMPACT (Innovative Methods in Pathogenesis and Child Treatment) program is led by Tina Goldstein, PhD (Director) and David Brent, MD (Co-Director), together with Executive Committee Members David Kolko PhD; Neal Ryan MD; Boris Birmaher MD; Danella Hafeman MD PhD and Heather Joseph DO. Additional faculty from multiple departments serve as fellowship mentors (both pre- and post-doctoral). This T32 provides research training in child mental health focused on 3 primary areas with potential for important research advances.

Our training faculty fall into 3 training cores (TCs): 1) TC1, Pathogenesis and Clinical Neuroscience underlying early-onset psychiatric disorders; 2) TC2, Developmental Longitudinal Perspectives on child mental disorders; and 3) TC3, Treatment Evaluation and Implementation Science. More information on faculty focus areas and research activities can be found below.

Cross-Cutting Area 1: Health Equity

Will be led by Brian Thoma PhD, whose expertise is in mechanisms of suicidal behavior among sexual minority youth. Kristen Eckstrand MD, will co-lead. Dr. Eckstrand’s work examines the neuropsychiatric underpinnings of trauma and resilience in adolescents, with an emphasis on minoritized communities and vulnerable populations. Both are graduates of the T32.

Cross-Cutting Area 2: Technological Advances

Will be directed by Neal Ryan, MD. Dr. Ryan is an expert in machine learning and utilizing big data in psychiatry. Oliver Lindhiem, PhD will co-lead. Dr. Lindhiem’s work incorporates a range of technologies (e.g., wearables, apps, online intervention) coupled with sophisticated methods (e.g., adaptive testing, gamification) to enhance assessment and treatment for youth with psychiatric disorders.

Cross-Cutting Area 3: Community-Based Research

Will be directed by Ana Radovic MD, MSc. A pediatrician with a research focus on enhancing identification and treatment of youth with psychiatric disorders in primary care, Dr. Radovic has deep knowledge and experience of implementation of behavioral health for youth in non-traditional settings.  David Kolko, PhD will co-lead who focuses on dissemination and implementation efforts designed to adapt and transport effective interventions for youth MH problems to various community settings or systems (e.g., juvenile justice, child welfare, pediatric primary care).
